GLENN HUGHES: New Solo Album Is My Most Focused Recording
February 20, 2005Blasting-Zone.com recently conducted an in-depth interview with legendary DEEP PURPLE/BLACK SABBATH vocalist Glenn Hughes. Several excerpts follow:
Blasting-Zone.com: What can you tell us about your forthcoming solo album, "Soul Mover"?
Glenn Hughes: "...It's coming out on Sanctuary Records... ...I think it's my most focused recording on many levels, really...”
Blasting-Zone.com: Taking into consideration the wealth of noteworthy material you've already released, that's quite the statement...
Glenn Hughes: "When I make records...I write all year 'round...I write a lot of different stuff. One this particular project, I took a little extra time... ...I wanted to have a record that was something that I wanted to put out rather than something some record company in Japan...would perceive as...one dimensional...I don’t like that. I've been both blessed and cursed to have the ability to write in many forms of music...be it rock, funk, soul or the ballads that I do. This record is for me, really...( RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS drummer) Chad Smith was a big part of that because he told me not to listen to people...he told me to make the kind of record that I would like...and that's what happened."
Blasting-Zone.com: How did you initially become involved with Chad Smith?
Glenn Hughes: "...I love him dearly...we're working together again today. He's the nicest guy that I've met in the industry. He's part of the biggest rock band in the world...which doesn't suck because even if he was a member of THE PET SHOP BOYS, I'd still want to work with him. His wife is my wife's best friend...we all travel together. We met a couple of years ago at a NAMM show and we're big fans of each other's playing. I'm a big Chad fan and he likes what I did with DEEP PURPLE...that's how we got started together. We play a lot together...we're actually working on a soundtrack for a movie with (former ALICE IN CHAINS guitarist) Jerry Cantrell today. It doesn't suck, ya know?"
Blasting-Zone.com: When you tour for your new solo record, what musicians will you be working with?
Glenn Hughes: "...J.J. Marsh, my guitar player from my last seven records...drums will be handled by Thomas Broman...all of my band is from Stockholm, Sweden... Kjell Haraldson...another Swede...on keyboards. ...As you know, I've been touring mainly in Europe...so I keep my band there. I have a rehearsal space and a studio there. We're going to do ten-week from February to April and then Tony [Iommi] and I are going to do some promos for the new IOMMI/HUGHES album. We’re penciling in some shows right now for me in America...hopefully with Chad Smith."
